MATERIALS
At FYNE, we carefully select premium materials that combine beauty, durability and comfort. Whether you're choosing 14k Gold Fill, 14k Solid Gold, Sterling Silver or Stainless Steel, every material has its own unique qualities and care requirements.
With the correct care, your jewelry can remain beautiful for many years. Below you'll find everything you need to know about each material, including how to care for it, clean it, and store it correctly.
WHAT IS 14K SOLID GOLD?
Solid gold jewelry is made entirely from a precious gold alloy rather than being coated or bonded with gold.
Our 14k solid gold contains 58.5% pure gold, with the remaining metals added to improve strength, durability, and suitability for everyday wear.
Unlike plated jewelry, the gold runs throughout the entire piece, meaning it will not wear away over time. With proper care, solid gold jewelry can last a lifetime and often becomes a treasured keepsake passed down through generations.
Our solid gold jewelry is marked AU585, confirming it is genuine 14k solid gold.
Benefits
- Genuine precious metal throughout
- Will not peel or wear away
- Highly durable
- Excellent long-term investment
- Suitable for everyday wear
- Can be professionally polished throughout its lifetime
Cleaning
Wash occasionally using warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth. A soft jewellery brush can be used to clean around settings, engravings, and clasps.
Dry thoroughly before wearing or storing.
Storage
Store separately from other jewelry to minimise scratches. We recommend keeping solid gold pieces inside a soft pouch or lined jewellery box in a cool, dry environment.
Chemicals to Avoid
Although solid gold is highly resistant to tarnishing, we recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to:
- Chlorine
- Bleach
- Strong household chemicals
- Harsh cleaning products
- Perfumes
- Cosmetics
Removing your jewelry before swimming or cleaning will help maintain its polished finish.
WHAT IS 14K GOLD FILL?
14k Gold Fill is a premium alternative to gold plating and one of our most popular materials.
Unlike standard gold-plated jewelry, 14k Gold Fill consists of a thick layer of genuine 14k gold that is permanently pressure bonded to a jeweller's brass core using heat and pressure. By law, the gold layer must make up at least 5% (1/20th) of the item's total weight, making it significantly thicker and more durable than traditional gold plating.
With proper care, 14k Gold Fill offers the luxurious appearance of solid gold while being more affordable, making it an excellent choice for everyday jewelry.
Benefits
- Genuine 14k gold outer layer
- 100x thicker than standard gold plating
- Highly durable
- Resistant to tarnishing and fading
- Suitable for everyday wear
- More affordable than solid gold
Cleaning
Clean your jewelry regularly using warm water, a small amount of mild soap, and a soft microfiber cloth. If required, use a very soft toothbrush to gently remove dirt from around chains and engravings.
Always dry thoroughly before storing.
Storage
Store your jewelry in a dry place away from humidity, ideally inside your FYNE box or a soft jewellery pouch. Store pieces separately to prevent scratching and chains from becoming tangled.
Chemicals to Avoid
To preserve the gold layer, avoid direct contact with:
- Perfume
- Hairspray
- Body lotions
- Sunscreen
- Fake tan
- Chlorine
- Bleach
- Household cleaning products
- Acids and abrasive cleaners
Although highly durable, we recommend removing your jewelry before swimming, exercising, showering, or using harsh chemicals.
WHAT IS 316L STAINLESS STEEL?
316L Stainless Steel is a premium-grade stainless steel renowned for its exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and durability.
It is widely used in high-quality jewelry because it withstands everyday wear exceptionally well while maintaining its appearance. It is also commonly referred to as surgical-grade stainless steel due to its excellent resistance to corrosion and suitability for prolonged skin contact.
Benefits
- Extremely durable
- Rust resistant
- Corrosion resistant
- Tarnish resistant
- Low maintenance
- Suitable for everyday wear
- Hypoallergenic for most people
Cleaning
Clean using warm soapy water and a soft cloth before drying thoroughly. A soft brush may be used to remove dirt from chains and detailed areas.
Storage
Although highly resistant to corrosion, storing your jewelry in a dry jewelry box or pouch will help prevent scratches and keep it looking its best.
Chemicals to Avoid
316L Stainless Steel is extremely resilient, but avoiding prolonged exposure to the following will help preserve its finish:
- Bleach
- Chlorine
- Strong cleaning chemicals
- Abrasive cleaning products
WHAT IS STERLING SILVER?
Sterling Silver is a precious metal consisting of 92.5% pure silver combined with 7.5% strengthening metals, creating a beautiful balance of durability and brilliance.
Our sterling silver jewelry is stamped S925, confirming its authenticity.
Silver naturally reacts with oxygen, moisture, and sulphur in the air, meaning it may gradually develop a light tarnish over time. This is completely normal and can easily be removed with regular cleaning.
Benefits
- Genuine precious metal
- Beautiful bright finish
- Suitable for everyday wear
- Easily polished
- Timeless appearance
- Fully recyclable
Cleaning
Use a soft silver polishing cloth regularly to maintain its shine.
For a deeper clean, wash with warm water and mild soap before drying immediately with a lint-free cloth.
Avoid abrasive polishing compounds unless recommended for sterling silver.
Storage
Sterling silver should always be stored somewhere cool and dry. Keeping it inside an airtight jewellery pouch or anti-tarnish bag will help slow the natural tarnishing process.
Store pieces separately to minimise scratching.
Chemicals to Avoid
Sterling silver is more reactive than gold, so avoid contact with:
- Perfume
- Lotions
- Hairspray
- Chlorine
- Bleach
- Cleaning chemicals
- Sulphur-containing products
- Rubber
Removing your jewelry before swimming, showering, exercising, or cleaning will help keep it looking brighter for longer.
